BONNIE ANDERSON, Pianist

Bonnie Anderson is renowned for her expressive and powerful interpretations of Chopin, Ravel and Brahms. The Grand Rapids Press noted that “Anderson’s    gifts point to the poetic...the Brahms Sonata swept the listener away in ecstasy.”   Ms. Anderson’s pianism has been deeply enriched by her many years in the middle of orchestral woodwind sections. She first appeared with the Boston Symphony Orchestra as flute soloist in Mozart’s Flute and Harp Concerto at age 14. A few months later Ms. Anderson performed the Grieg Piano Concerto with the Boston Pops. As both pianist and flutist she has performed in the United States, France, Germany and South America. Ms. Anderson has also performed as piano soloist with the Boston Symphony, Peoria Symphony, Bach Society of Orchestra of Harvard University, Northern Illinois Philharmonic and the Bach Festival String Orchestra. 

 Collaborating with artists from the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, she has performed in Alice Tully Hall, Jordan Hall, the Austrian Embassy and numerous universities around the country. Ms. Anderson is a frequent guest artist with the Walden Chamber Players and the Art of Music Chamber Players. She performed Hindemith’s Trio with Branford Marsalis, saxophonist, and Christof Huebner, violist, at the Nantucket Musical Arts Society Series. An advocate of new music, Ms. Anderson has performed with Alea III, New Opera & Musical Theatre Initiative, and Lumen Contemporary Ensemble.

 Ms. Anderson’s honors include the Young Pianist Award at Tanglewood and top prizes at the Young Keyboard Artists Association International Competition and San Antonio International Keyboard Competition. She has competed in the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. In 1999, Ms. Anderson attended the  French Piano Institute in Paris where she performed at La Schola Cantorum and received an award for her performances of Debussy and Ravel. While at the Institute, she traveled to Ravel’s home in Montfort l’Amaury and played his piano.

Ms. Anderson studied at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School,  The Juilliard School, Michigan State University, Northern Illinois University  and Boston University.  Her principal teachers have been Wha Kyung Byun,  Russell Sherman, Martin Canin, Deborah Moriarty, Donald Walker and  Benjamin Pasternack. She has performed for Leon Fleisher, Dominique  Merlet, Roy Howat and Yo-Yo Ma in a variety of master classes.

 Recent performances include a recital with Peter Stumpf, principal cellist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, in the New England Artist Series; recital at the Kalliropscope Gallery Concert Series with soprano Marguerite Krull; and pianist in the World Premiere of the Kreutzer Sonata at the Merrimack Repertory Theatre. She is a member of the Orchestra of Indian Hill and also performs with the New Hampshire Symphony and Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra. Ms. Anderson is Adjunct Professor  and Head of the Keyboard Department at University of Massachusetts Lowell. Ms. Anderson’s recent CD release features solo piano music by Bach, Mozart, Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Debussy, Ravel and Rorem.
